Pasta Dishes of Hungary

Pasta dishes are a very important and unique part of Hungarian cooking. There are sweet, delectable recipes as well as savoury, mouth-watering creations served up weekly in every single Hungarian household. Of course Hungarians love their meat dishes as well, but you will be amazed to learn that Hungarians or “Magyars” as we call ourselves, serve pasta dishes and vegetble creations weekdays and mouth-watering Hungarian Goulash, Chicken Paprikash, Schnitzels and other meat specialties accompanied by golden Hungarian Chicken Soup. But lets get back to todays top, Hungarian Pastas.

Basic Poppy Seed Recipe

1 pack of “sagnarelli” pasta, or any flat wide pasta

you like, such as bowtie etc.

1 cup ground poppy seeds

3 tablespoons of sugar

1 package of vanilla sugar

1 tablespoon of vegetable or grape seed oil

For pasta water:

1 tablespoon of salt

1 tablespoon of olive oil

6 cups of water

Hungarian Poppy Seed Pasta or “Makos Teszta” in Hungarian is perhaps the most popular of the sweet pasta dishes. It is very simple to prepare as can see in my video recipe that is featured on my cooking show Cooking with Helen M Radics™

Hungarian Cottage Cheese Pasta or “Turos Teszta” is another Hungarian favourite that is served sweet, with a hint of Vanilla Sugar, raisins and a few more special ingredients. Interestingly is also a very popular savoury dish with a hint of crispy bacon bits on top.

Hungarian Walnut Pasta is another sweet specialty that every member of your family will adore. Why not try some of these lovely sweet and savoury recipes that will surely become new family favourites. Hungarian Potato Paprikash Pasta or “Krumplis Teszta” is one of the most popular savoury dish of Hungary. Another lovely dish that could be served sweet of savoury is Cabbage Pasta depending on the spices that you add. Use freshly ground black pepper for the savoury version and sugar on the sweet version.
